International Data Privacy Day: The Cost of Cybercrime Reaches Record Levels Globally

Argentina
January 23, 2026
  • Protecting personal information has become a key factor for operational resilience, trust, and competitiveness for organizations.
  • According to Cirion, phishing, ransomware, social engineering attacks, supply chain and cloud attacks, as well as online identity fraud and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks, are the main vulnerabilities increasingly observed.

The global average cost of a data breach has reached $4.44 million, a figure that includes expenses related to incident response, fines, productivity loss, and damage to the reputation of affected organizations, according to IBM’s Cost of a Data Breach Report. In the United States, the average rises to $10.22 million per breach, due to stringent regulatory requirements and litigation related to the exposure of personal information. In Latin America, the figure drops to $3.81 million.

When Convention 108 of the Council of Europe—the first international treaty focused on data protection—was opened for signature on January 28, 2006, the volume and value of digital information were far from what they are today. In fact, the 2005 report noted that almost half of data breaches were due to the loss or theft of physical devices, such as laptops or USB drives. However, the quantum leap in the importance of this issue that would unfold over the next two decades was already visible. For this reason, it was established that each year this day would be celebrated as International Data Privacy Day.

Today, the issue of security breaches stands out as one of the most costly and complex challenges for organizations worldwide. The financial, operational, and reputational impacts of digital attacks continue to escalate, reflecting the growing sophistication of threats and the need to strengthen cybersecurity approaches. The problem affects everyone equally: during the first half of 2025, Fortinet detected no less than 1.6 billion intrusion attempts in Argentina alone.

At Cirion, we monitor all security events occurring across the region, from Miami to Tierra del Fuego, from our three Security Operations Centers (SOCs). Using this information, we focus on developing secure platforms in the context of increasing frequency and sophistication of attacks.

Looking ahead, new challenges are emerging. A PwC report found that only 24% of companies worldwide spend more on preventive measures than reactive ones, which implies higher risk and costs, as well as poorer preparedness for the rise of AI-driven attacks. On another front, the geopolitical dimension is gaining importance: Gartner estimates that one of this year’s technological priorities will be “geopatriation,” that is, moving workloads to sovereign or regional cloud providers.

In this context, International Data Privacy Day serves as a reminder: strategic decisions, sustained investment, and a comprehensive approach are required to keep pace with technological evolution and emerging risks.

Cirion offers end-to-end layered security solutions: from mitigating Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks at the outer edge to zero-trust strategies (ZTNA, zero trust network access) that ensure secure connectivity for remote users to applications, as well as WAAP (web and API application protection), next-generation perimeter firewalls, and control tools that allow organizations to visualize their landscape and assess their security posture.

“Data breaches are no longer just a cost issue—they are a direct threat to the resilience of digital operations and to the trust companies build with their customers,” said Miguel Rodríguez, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) of Cirion. “Protecting data means securing the infrastructure that transports and stores it, with robust architectures, continuous monitoring, and response capabilities that allow operations to continue even in the face of security incidents,” he concluded.
